George Brinsley Le Fanu, the youngest son of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, painter and illustrator who published his work under the name “Brinsley Le Fanu” was born in Dublin on August 1st 1854 and died in the Wandsworth suburb of London on June 25, 1929. In addition to providing the “Preface” and illustrations for the posthumous collection of his father’s tales, THE WATCHER AND OTHER WEIRD STORIES (Downey & C., 1894), and illustrating various other reissues of his father’s works, he also exhibited landscape paintings at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Authors, the New Water Colour Society, the Dudley Gallery, and the Manchester City Art Gallery. He was also well known during his lifetime as a prolific illustrator for W. T. Stead’s series “Books for the Bairns”, which specialized in adapting stories for young readers. In addition to several volumes devoted to fairy tales from various nations, Brinsley’s contributions to the series include Coleridge’s THE ANCIENT MARINER, Joel Chandler Harris’s UNCLE REMUS, Sir Walter Scott’s IVANHOE, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s UNCLE TOM'S CABIN, THE STORY OF HIAWATHA FROM THE POEM BY HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW, TALES FROM TENNYSON: THE LADY OF SHALLOTT AND THE VOYAGE OF MAELDUNE (or STRANGE ADVENTURES IN THE MAGIC ISLANDS), and Lewis Carroll’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

The dates of Brinsley’s birth and death deserve some consideration, given the bewildering amount of variation given these dates in print and on the internet. The internet website, “The Peerage: A genealogical survey of the peerage of Britain as well as the royal families of Europe” unequivocally offers the following precise dates: “b. 1 Aug 1855, d. 28 Feb 1935” Unfortunately, both of these are incorrect. Thomas Patrick Le Fanu’s MEMOIR OF THE LE FANU FAMILY appears to be the source for the 1855 birth date, but William Mc Cormack’s 1854 accords with the age of 74 recorded in the obituaries, and Douglas A. Anderson has confirmed the date of Brinsley's death by locating the brief obituary for our man in the Thursday, June 27, 1929 issue of The Times:

“Mr. George Brinsley Sheridan Le Fanu who died in London on Tuesday, was the last surviving child of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873), the author of “Uncle Silas,” whose grandmother was Alicia, the favourite sister of Richard Brinsley Sheridan.”
